A 60-metre pedestrian footbridge showing rust stains and a worrying bounce. We audited, load-tested and designed a retrofit that kept it open through the repairs.
The challenge
Nocturne’s footbridge carried schoolchildren every morning — yet bearings had seized, expansion joints leaked onto girders, and the deck vibrated under marching feet. Closing it meant a 2 km detour.
The municipality wanted a verdict, not a thesis: is it safe, what must be fixed first, and can it stay open while we fix it?

Diagnosed like a patient.
Survey instruments, cover readings and core tests mapped the damage span by span; vibration readings quantified the bounce. Bearings and joints were specified for replacement first, deck stiffening second — staged so one lane stayed open throughout, with monitoring limits that would halt work if exceeded.
Open throughout, steady now.
Pedestrian counts held steady — and vibration complaints stopped. The municipality now inspects the bridge on the issued calendar, quoting spans by name. The engineers call it “the bridge that finally feels solid.”
